Fracking California: Understanding the Threats to Our Water and Climate

Have you heard of “Fracking” but thought it was a practice done only in the remote reaches of North Dakota or Texas? Think again. This invasive and risky method of extracting oil and gas from deep shale formations is poised to become prominent in California with potential far reaching impacts. Join us to learn more at this workshop hosted by Global Exchange and SanDiego350.org, part of a state-wide tour. Read more or watch the intro video below.

Fracking: A Faustian bargain? A commentary by SD350′s Peg Mitchell in the UT 3/28/13

The event will bring together community activists, scientists, and local leaders to discuss how hydraulic fracturing could impact the availability, cost and cleanliness of our water, the impacts of extracting sour crude oil from the Monterey Shale Field on climate change, and other risks.  Speakers will discuss ways communities can engage on the topic, with the goal of helping identify the right approach for the local San Diego community.

Speakers include:

  • Bob Filner – Mayor of San Diego
  • Rose Braz – Center for Biological Diversity
  • Shannon Biggs – Global Exchange
  • Ben Price – Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund
  • Doug Shields – Former Pittsburgh City Council Member who passed a rights-based ordinance banning fracking in his city

This event is supported by Sierra Club San Diego, Women Occupy San Diego, WiLDCOAST, San Diego Coastkeeper and more!
