Dear , This past summer we saw record-setting heat waves, drought, floods and, now, hurricanes. The climate crisis is manifesting all around us–and it is only part of a broader environmental crisis that cries out for solutions. Our faith traditions and the lifestyles they advocate must be part of these solutions. And that is where the Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice (ICEJ) comes in. The Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice was founded to motivate persons of faith to take eco-justice action. Everybody needs to step up and do what they can. We hope that you have taken part in our events and programs all of which have been FREE! Now we need your help to continue these very programs.
SInce our founding in 2017, the Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice has relied on bequests and donations to do our work. We are almost exclusively a volunteer-run organization but we also have operational costs which cannot be avoided. It is no exaggeration to say that our funds are currently very low and that for us to continue to do the work that we are called to we must raise money. So let me briefly turn to that work. We are a small organization but I am very proud of the work that we do. ICEJ –
- Educates – our Advancing Earth Justice series has featured speakers on factory farming and pandemic risk, the UN Climate talks in Paris and Glasgow, and a Buddhist perspective on the eco-crisis.
- Equips – we host workshops and retreats on cultivating resilience (strength, flexibility) in the face of the climate crisis.
- Mobilizes – we have worked with SanDiego350 on transportation equity, urged the County Board of Supervisors to further decarbonize their Regional Framework, and recently gathered at Wells Fargo bank to demand that they stop funding the fossil fuel industry.
And we have just launched, with GRID Alternatives, a BIPOC Outreach program to see where we might support frontline communities working on eco-justice issues in their neighborhoods while, at the same time, offering homeowners free rooftop solar through GRID. We cast a wide net because earth justice is a very broad concept, but our emphasis is to move from faith to eco-justice advocacy. We all of us know how urgent the need is to directly address the climate crisis. Every voice must be lifted; every pair of hands engaged. So could you do one or more of the following:
- Make a monthly or one-time donation of $100, $50 or $25?
- Organize an ICEJ presentation and/or special offering at your faith community? We would be happy to explain our work to your community in whatever forum makes the most sense. Please contact Phil at phil@icejsd.org.
I want to close by thanking all those persons and communities that have already given–you make our work possible! And I hope all of you will see it in your heart to support us with whatever you can give. Many blessings,
Phil Petrie Senior Coordinator ICEJ
