Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice (ICEJ) is a volunteer organization of San Diego faith leaders and communities that serve to advocate for climate and environmental justice both in policy and in the public square. We believe that the values held in common by all faith traditions include the care for creation and care for the most vulnerable in society.

ICEJ SPEARHEADS BANKING ON
OUR FUTURE COALITION

The International Energy Agency said last year that if we wanted to meet the Paris climate targets “there can be no new investments in oil, gas and coal, from now – from this year.” But many banks still continue to fund new oil and gas projects.  It is time for us to take action and raise our voices against these destructive practices. There are four banks that are the major funders – Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citibank. So Third Act is organizing a National Day of Action to demand that these banks stop funding new oil and gas projects or we will move our business (checking, savings, and credit card accounts) elsewhere. ICEJ has been working with Third Act and a coalition of organizations (including SanDiego350, Climate Action Campaign, Hammond Climate Solutions and the Sierra Club) on the San Diego event.

On Tues. March 21 @ 11:30 AM-12:30 PM we will meet at the downtown location of Chase Bank, 101 West Broadway, Ste. 100 for a program including break dancing, inspiring speakers and cutting up credit cards ! We will also march together to Citibank just down the block. Please join us for this essential action. Let’s bank on our future, not their profits!!

And whether you can join us or not, please sign the Third Act’s Banking on our Future Pledge and then move your business elsewhere!!  These FAQs may help with that process.

ICEJ LEADERSHIP UPDATE

Our Chairperson since we were founded in 2017, Rev. Dr. Beth Johnson is leaving San Diego to be closer to family in Illinois. Anyone who has been active in social justice issues here in San Diego will know how deeply Beth gave of her life and her time to witness that love means justice.. We quote her on the cover of our new brochure, ”Everything is connected. Everything is at stake. Everything we do matters.” We will miss her greatly and we wish her all the best in her new home. In the not-too-distant future we plan to bring her back (via Zoom) for one of our Advancing Earth Justice talks, which you will not want to miss – so look for that.

We cannot fill Beth’s shoes, so we have split the Chair position into two Co-Chairs, Yusef Miller and Phil Petrie. You can read about them on our website. And by the way, Yusef gave a fiery speech at the Biden: Declare Climate Emergency Action at the Federal Building on Jan. 21. We didn’t record it, but will next time and post it.

ICEJ FUNDRAISING

Phil has been working with our Coordinator, Julie Schlossberg, on fundraising for ICEJ and their efforts have paid off.  ICEJ was awarded a $7500 California Environmental Grassroots Fund by The Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment which will go toward general support and capacity building. Closer to home, Universal Spirit Center, which is located in San Diego and part of Centers for Spiritual Living, selected ICEJ as a Global Heart Tithe grant recipient, donating $750.  Thank you to both orgs for generously supporting our eco-justice work!!

And a special thank you to all of you out there who responded to our direct appeal out of your own pockets. It is a cliché (but none-the-less true) - you make our work possible!

Note: We could use your help to find additional grants we can apply to this year. Does your faith community offers grants and donations to organizations working to make a difference in the world? If so, please contact us at info@icejsd.org with more information.  We would love to learn more and apply.

SAVE THE DATE! ICEJ AND PARTNERS PLAN INTERFAITH SERVICE
April 29 in BALBOA PARK

With the environmental crisis impacting us just about everywhere, we face great challenges. At ICEJ we believe our faiths and their rich traditions of stewardship must rise to meet these challenges. So we come together for an interfaith and intergenerational service on April 29, 2023 to connect with the Divine however understood, acknowledge our human complicity in this crisis, and move forward in hope and faith toward further action. This year we are excited to bring in more high school and college youth who are helping us plan the event. If you want to join our planning committee or if you know any youth who are passionate about eco-justice and would be interested in planning this event, please contact Phil Petrie at petriep2@gmail.com to learn how to get involved
