Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice (ICEJ) is a volunteer organization of San Diego faith leaders and communities that serve to advocate for climate and environmental justice both in policy and in the public square. We believe that the values held in common by all faith traditions include the care for creation and care for the most vulnerable in society.

As the environmental crisis deepens, we must take action to heal the planet where we have wounded it. For persons of faith that action is rooted in our faith traditions and practices. So we will gather on Saturday, April 29* at 5 PM for the service and picnic at the Moreton Bay Fig Tree arbor in Balboa Park for an interfaith, interactive and intergenerational service to connect with the Divine presence and build toward a thriving and diverse future. There will be music, hands-on activities and prayers from diverse faiths. This is a family-friendly event and youth are encouraged to participate. Following the service, we host a bring-your-own picnic for community and fellowship.  All are invited to attend!!  Bring a lawn chair if you wish to sit.

For more information, contact Phil Petrie - Phil@icejsd.org.                           * Rain date – TBD.

Banking On Our Future Event
 A Success Despite Rain

Despite pouring rain on the morning of March 21, fifty people came out to protest Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo’s funding of the fossil fuel industry as part of Third Act’s national event. We were entertained by break dancing, listened to speakers including ICEJ’s own Clovis Honoré (watch the video by clicking the image above) and cut up our bank issued credit cards. If you braved the rain, thank you so much!!! If you didn’t, you can still pledge to move your money out of these banks. We continue this campaign with our next event below.

Invest in your Values, Save the Date!

On Sunday, May 21 Michael Richardson of Rivers and Mountains GreenFaith will present a  wonderfully informative workshop, Investing in Our Values. This is part of ICEJ’s Advancing Earth Justice series of talks.

From 2:00 to 3:15 PM this virtual presentation will offer reasons and detailed resources for moving our money from funding fossil fuel extraction, production, and distribution; and then offer options to direct our money to banks, insurers and investment companies that fund local businesses and farms, affordable housing, and renewable clean energy projects.

Trees for Faith

Through our Interfaith Tree Committee, ICEJ has collaborated with Kate’s Trees and One Jubilee Earth to create the ICEJ Tree Growing Guide. We invite you to contact us for more information.  With the ever increasing awareness of the shortened time left to mitigate the worst effects of the climate crisis, the scene is continually changing for the availability of free trees and other relevant resources.

We suggest that you initially share the guide with interested members of your faith community.

San Diego to Consider Electrification for
New Construction

The City of San Diego will soon consider an ordinance to require all-electric new construction.  Why would they do that?

Burning fossil gas (euphemistically named “natural” by the industry) in our homes and workplaces is really bad – bad for your health, bad for your safety and bad for your wallet!  Not to mention bad for the environment.  We will need to swap out gas appliances for modern and safe electric ones in all our existing buildings over the coming decades.  Let’s future-proof new buildings by constructing them with all-electric appliances, and stop creating more pollution.

Over 70 cities in California have already passed electric new construction ordinances, including Encinitas and Solana Beach.  I urge you to lend your support for the City of San Diego to join this movement.

And please consider going electric next time you need to replace a gas appliance.  www.switchison.org has some great educational materials, including a lookup by zip code for incentives and contractors to help you out.  Let’s electrify everything together!
