School electrification win & the problem of methane emissions

This month we celebrate the Sweetwater School District's decision to go all-electric, thanks to community voices! We also have an *exclusive* deep dive into where methane emissions come from, why they are increasing so quickly, and how we are working to reduce them.

Check out the linked climate-related blogs written by our volunteers below. Congratulations to our Member of the Month, Emma Weibel, on SD350's Youth4Climate team!

THANK YOU for your support!

‘Tis the season to give thanks, and we would like to give a huge THANK YOU to you! Whether you volunteer on one of our teams, signed a petition, attended a rally, or donated, you have made a positive impact on preventing climate change and climate injustice.

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, we acknowledge that many descriptions of this holiday gloss over our nation’s history of oppression, exploitation, and genocide of Indigenous people. SanDiego350 works on unceded land of the Kumeyaay, Luiseño, Cupeño and Cahuilla people. We all have much to learn from Indigenous people on how steward land, they respect nature and it’s a mutual, give and take relationship. Viewing Earth as a commodity to be used and extracted from - is how we ended up here in the midst of a climate crisis. SanDiego350's dedicated volunteers and staff are committed to fighting for a more equitable and just future, as we know that racial justice is at the root of environmental racism and economic inequality.

We hope to see you at Party4thePlanet on Dec 2nd so we can thank you in person!

There's Something About Methane

Methane levels in the atmosphere are climbing dramatically. This is scary news since methane is a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. According to NASA, methane has already been responsible for 20 to 30% of global warming since the industrial revolution. The rate of accumulation of methane jumped by a factor of 3 between 2010 and 2020 and it looks to be increasing still faster. Where is all this methane coming from and why is it increasing so quickly? We’ll answer that question and explore some of the ways SanDiego350 is working to reduce different sources of methane.

In the United States, the largest human-associated methane source is the fossil fuel industry, totaling 35% of all emissions. The bulk of this emission comes from wasteful leaks in the industry’s drilling and distribution of oil and gas. (...) Domestic livestock are the second largest methane source in the U.S., contributing a whopping 33% of methane emissions. As to the agricultural production of methane, an obvious solution is to eat less meat and dairy, something that is environmentally sound, healthy and easy on our pocketbook and our conscience. Sweetwater School District commits to going all-electric

Sweetwater Union High School District Prioritizes Student-Led Initiative Over Gas Industry Profits

SUHSD follows the lead of SDUSD and commits to transitioning to all-electric buildings and bus fleets

On Monday, November 13th, 2023 students, activists, teachers, faculty, parents, climate leaders, and our community joined forces yesterday to rally for a student-led electrification resolution for the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD). The resolution passed unanimously,* marking another historic win for local school districts.

“I am proud that my school district took this step to protect my future by helping to eliminate indoor and outdoor air pollution by switching to renewable energy! Air pollution in the community is a huge problem, and this resolution’s focus on electrifying buses and buildings will help our community breathe easier.”

Member of the Month: Emma

What do you recommend to people who want to have a larger impact through the environmental movement? The first thing is to get involved with a movement, finding people to support you and realizing you’re not alone is the first step to converting climate anxiety into climate action. I strongly believe that every person has their own individual place within the climate movement, and this intersectionality is perhaps what I love the most about environmentalism. For example, I love public speaking, and I think my place in this movement is behind a megaphone. But that isn’t any more important than the people planning the protests and showing up time and time again for the cause. My advice is to find what you’re willing to give, and then give it all, while also prioritizing your mental health and community. Look for opportunities that fit what you are good at, and then sign up, it’s as simple as that. - Emma Weibel, Youth4Climate
