Why SD350 Endorses Power SD Campaign

If we want a just and equitable transition to renewable energy, we need to fire San Diego Gas & Electric and their parent company, Sempra, and take control of our energy.

“Power San Diego” is a campaign to put an initiative in front of voters on the November 2024 ballot that will end the City of San Diego’s franchise agreement with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDGE) and create a not-for-profit municipal electric distribution utility.

Replacing SDG&E, a corporation, with a not-for-profit, would first eliminate profit margins from our bills. If the Power San Diego initiative is passed, we’d see electricity rates drop by up to 20% immediately. Under SDG&E, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) projects our rates will continue to increase to the tune of roughly 10% a year for the foreseeable future.

Power San Diego is doing something revolutionary. Not only are we going against an oil and gas powered monopoly- we’re doing it with people power. SanDiego350 has joined a coalition of volunteers working to collect at least 80,000 signatures from Registered City of San Diego Voters by late April.

SANDAG Leadership Goals and Obstacles

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is the region’s main transportation and planning agency.  Recent turnover of the leadership at SANDAG gives rise to both reflection and excitement. Reflection on the legacy of Hasan Ikhrata, who held the Chief Executive Officer position from 2018 to year-end 2023, and excitement about the SANDAG Board of Directors (made up of representatives from the 18 municipalities in the county and from the county at large) unanimously appointed Colleen Clementson, former Deputy CEO of SANDAG, as its new interim-CEO.

---

The excitement regarding Ms. Clementson's appointment to the interim-CEO position is heightened by news that the fundraising pressure will be taken away from SANDAG and left to the people. The Environmental Health Coalition, transit riders and community activists garnered the required number of votes to qualify a “transit first” measure to be put on the November 5, 2024 ballot.  The “Measure to Fund San Diego County Transportation, Infrastructure and Safety Projects” proposes increasing the San Diego sales tax (currently 7.25%) half-a-cent to 7.75% and requires a majority of the popular vote to pass.

Kick off event for a Safe and Healthy California Campaign in San Diego!

WHERE: Centro Cultural de la Raza - 2004 Park Blvd. San Diego, California 92101

In 2022, the California legislature passed a bill that was signed into law which requires 3,200 ft health buffers between oil drilling and processing sites and people’s homes, schools hospitals, playgrounds and workplaces.

Big Oil spent $20M to immediately collect signatures to put a referendum on the November 2024 ballot. This is an effort to repeal the law at the ballot box, and at the very least delayed its implementation for 2 years.

We need your help to fight Big Oil and ensure the law is kept in place! Join our interactive kickoff event to get involved in this crucial campaign in San Diego County.

This is an all-ages event, with high school students and adults working together to lead the charge. All this is to ensure that come November, San Diegans vote strongly to keep this law in place and protect our communities from Big Oil.
