In this month's coverage, we explore into the significance of the Let’s Go! San Diego campaign on the November 2024 ballot, learn how excessive shopping and over consumption affects the environment, and shed light of voting in favor of SB 1137 on the upcoming ballot.

Campaign Spotlight: Youth v. Oil

Congratulations to Youth v. Oil as they achieved a significant win last week! Their SB 1137 Resolution was unanimously passed by the San Diego City Council’s Environment Committee. Huge thanks to Abby Deckert and Keala Minna-Choe for presenting the Youth v. Oil proposal to the committee and to the other climate activists who shared public and written comments. Watch the recording (our item starts around 2:27:00), check out the photos, and read the blog by one of our youth advocates.

Let’s Go! San Diego is on the Ballot! Now what?

For three years, SanDiego350 has been part of a coalition of labor, businesses, community groups, and other environmental organizations fighting for Let’s Go! San Diego. And as of last month, we’ve officially entered the final stage! That means that when you get your ballot this November, Let’s Go! San Diego will be one of the measures you’ll be asked to vote on.

Right now, SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) is in the midst of a new iteration of a process that happens every four years. They are developing their 2025 regional plan- which will guide development of our transportation system for the next several years. SanDiego350 has advocated for and endorsed many of the ideas and suggested projects put forth in the 2021 Regional Plan and expected to appear in the 2025 Plan. That includes but is not limited to: Airport Connector, Purple Line from South County to Kearny Mesa, Blue Line Express for South County, etc.

Let’s Go! San Diego adds just a half cent to the sales tax, already among the lowest in the state. That money will be matched by state and federal funds. In similar instances, funds are matched 4:1, making this a strong investment in transportation. But it also makes it an investment in health. When transportation systems give people choices aside from driving, populations served have lower rates of heart disease, obesity, and related diseases. Plus, reductions in driving and revitalized infrastructure paid for by Let’s Go! San Diego is projected to lead to an incredible 20% reduction in air pollution.
Now our job is to convince people across the county to vote YES! on Let’s Go! San Diego!

The Devil Wears Prada

My New Year’s resolution is to not shop this year. Sure, I’ll buy necessities and replace something if it’s essential, but I’m not going to buy anything that I don’t absolutely need. So far, it’s been easy to live up to and has made my life happier too.

Every bit of stuff that we buy impacts the climate. It takes energy to collect the raw materials, energy to manufacture, energy to make the packing materials, and energy to ship. That adds up to a lot of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere and it’s true for pretty much everything we consume.

Take fashion, for example. According to Business Insider, fashion production causes 10% of global carbon emissions, more than international flights and as much as the European Union combined. Worse still, fashion manufacturing uses large amounts of water (2,000 gallons for a pair of jeans), releases microplastics into the environment, and employs people in poor working conditions, frequently using forced and child labor.

...With my new resolution, I don’t need to spend time shopping, I don’t need to figure out where I’m going to put stuff, I don’t need to worry about stuff getting stolen, and I don’t need to maintain more stuff. I never have to ask myself, ‘why did I ever buy this stupid thing in the first place?’ When I do have to buy something, I’m going to buy the thing that lasts the longest and has the least environmental impact.

With my new resolution, I’ve got more time, more money, more space in the house and I can feel good every day about doing a little bit more for the planet.

WHEN: March 23, 2024 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
WHERE: Centro Cultural de la Raza - 2004 Park Blvd. San Diego, California 92101

In 2022, the California legislature passed a bill that was signed into law which requires 3,200 ft health buffers between oil drilling and processing sites and people’s homes, schools hospitals, playgrounds and workplaces.

Big Oil spent $20M to immediately collect signatures to put a referendum on the November 2024 ballot. This is an effort to repeal the law at the ballot box, and at the very least delayed its implementation for 2 years.

We need your help to fight Big Oil and ensure the law is kept in place! Join our interactive kickoff event to get involved in this crucial campaign in San Diego County.
