Campaign Update: Youth v. Oil
Defending CA’s Oil Setbacks - Youth v. Oil Resolution

By Taarika Sethee and Abby Deckert - Youth v. Oil advocates

Youth v. Oil and SD350 members have been working hard on the Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California and have several accomplishments to share.

This campaign is working to defend the 2022 CA oil setbacks legislation that would require buffer zones between toxic oil drilling and homes, schools and playgrounds. Big Oil delayed implementation of, and is trying to repeal the law, through a referendum on the November 2024 ballot. (read the blog)

We passed a resolution unanimously at the Encinitas City Council on February 28th in support of keeping the law. See press coverage and a recording of the meeting, starting at 20:30.

The resolution also passed the SD City Council Environment Committee on February 15th. On Tuesday, April 9th at 10 am, the resolution will be voted on at the full SD City Council. Please show up in support or submit a public comment. Register here

Next, we’ll be taking our resolution to Del Mar, La Mesa and Vista so look out for information about how to support the campaign.

This past Saturday, we held our campaign kick off - lots of great energy around this campaign! See photos here. If you missed the kickoff, complete this form to volunteer on the San Diego portion of the Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California.

'First We Kill MBAs'

I have an MBA from one of the most prominent business schools in the US. I interned and did the training program at arguably the world’s best known investment bank (I hated it). I’ve been a venture capitalist and entrepreneur for most of my professional life, and I’ve rubbed shoulders with quite a few billionaires and countless finance and investment professionals. As one finds in any walk of life, some are wonderful, generous, progressive people, others make Ebenezer Scrooge look saintly. Now you know my vantage point, mea culpa!

The overarching problem with business education is the focus on money alone as the measure of merit of any business activity. Many economists argue that anything that matters winds up affecting the comings and goings of cash, but the evidence is strongly against that thesis. We’ll dispatch with that wishful thinking in a subsequent article.

I’m a proponent of capitalism, and I’m convinced that there is a lot of merit in business education. The problem is the narrowness with which it is construed, particularly the use of money as the sole measure of human progress and happiness. When you add in an unduly short-term, short-sighted view of the world and what counts as a financial return, then you have a recipe for carnage.

San Diego's Journey to Net-Zero

In the race against climate change, the San Diego region has embarked on an ambitious journey outlined by the Regional Decarbonization Framework (RDF). The primary goal? To achieve net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2045 with the County’s Climate Action Plan Update and their Regional Decarbonization Framework. This groundbreaking initiative not only recognizes the urgency of addressing climate change but also emphasizes the importance of equitable and sustainable strategies in the pursuit of a greener future.

Strategies Unveiled: How RDF Plans to Achieve Net-Zero

1. Building a Greener Tomorrow Transitioning from Fossil Fuels to Electric

2. Renewable Energy
Increasing Renewable Energy Share

3. Responsible Land Use
Protecting Natural Ecosystems

4. Revolutionizing Transportation
Investing in Sustainable Transportation

As San Diego takes bold strides towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions, the Regional Decarbonization Framework stands as a testament to the power of collective action.

A Beginners Guide to Environmental Legislation

We often think of climate activism as people on the streets marching, holding signs, and chanting for change – but climate activism can also look like hours spent on the computer researching policies, talking to local elected officials, and collecting signatures for ballot initiatives. This is the crucial behind the scenes work that SanDiego350’s Legislative Team dedicates their time toward, and it pays off!

SanDiego350’s Legislative Team is focusing on demanding accountability and compensation from big oil companies for their wide-scale damages to the environment. The proposed bills will require Big Oil companies to monetarily compensate for the damages they have caused to local communities and effectively shut down their activities. The team endorses bills that address various issues such as transportation, oil wells, etc. and makes sure that the bills contain an environmental justice component in addressing how the bills will affect people, not just the environment. Recently, our Legislative team has proposed two, two-year term bills. Bill SB 252 requires divestment of fossil fuels by the state retirement funds for government employees (PERS) and teachers (CalSTRS). Bill SB 1137, which our Youth v. Oil team is advocating for, focusing on banning oil well activities near school zones and hospital areas.

Land of the Giants

How America’s Obsession With Gigantic Vehicles is Killing the Planet and People

Every day, I find myself struggling to see around these huge SUVs, jacked-up pickups and even bigger RVs. If you drive a smaller, fuel-efficient car, these hulks are a serious hazard to seeing and being seen and life-threatening risk to life and limb. Nonetheless, Americans love them – though they drive like, well, trucks. Manufacturers love them too since they garner much higher profits than sedans.

No matter how many technological advances we make, these giant beasts are going to continue to have a much larger climate footprint than sedans even if they are hybrids or electric. As cited by Jalopnik, trucks have the flattest recorded efficiency gains of any vehicles going all the way back to 1975. That same report shows that your average sedan has a fuel efficiency 34% higher than the average truck-based SUV (an SUV built on a truck chassis). Considering that truck-based SUVs now make up 45% of market, with an ever increasing market share, we have little hope of making a dent in US-based transportation climate footprint without a change in consumer habits.

How is this acceptable? There seem to be no laws restraining car companies in their quest to build ever bigger vehicles and there seems to be little movement to call out the ownership of these vehicles as both horrible for the planet and dangerous to human life.

Ashes to Action: Honoring Our Climate Dead, Protesting Fossil Fuel Banks

WHEN: April 5, 2024 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm
WHERE: Citibank - 740 Lomas Santa Fe Dr, Solana Beach, California 92075

Climate change is making extreme weather events like this winter’s floods and rainstorms in SoCal the new normal and there are often fatalities. In the past fifty years approximately two million people have died from such events. Climate change is primarily driven by the fossil fuel industry which in turn is funded by our financial sector.  From 2016-2022 four big US banks–Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo–have poured over one trillion dollars into the fossil fuel industry. THIS MUST STOP!!

To protest this blood money and honor those who have died (most of whom are from developing nations), a coalition of environmental groups is holding a series of memorial services/protests in different locations around San Diego.

This event is sponsored by the Interfaith Coalition for Earth Justice and partners including Third Act So Cal, GreenFaith, SanDiego350, CleanEarth4Kids, and the North County Equity and Justice Coalition.
