Don't miss out! Our Raise the Alarm (RTA) Team will be protesting Sempra Energy, San Diego’s local fossil fuel company, on Thursday, May 9th at Sempra's headquarters.
Over the past four years our Raise the Alarm team has been taking the lead on several creative approaches to activism to demand Sempra stop fracking our future! Not only does the team march, and chant but they use the arts to get our message across in a more impactful way that draws media attention.
Last year, the RTA team led a creative protest where volunteers came together to create a huge chalk art mural in front of Sempra Energy Headquarters (read the blog) to tell Sempra and SDG&E to stop cooking our planet with their fracked gas. At protests, volunteers also wear large puppet heads and suits to depict "big oil execs".
Not only does SD350 use the arts to demand action, but we also engage in civil disobedience (pictured above) where our volunteers risk arrest for climate action. Volunteers have put their bodies on the line by blocking Sempra Energy's entrance to the building and their parking. We are turning the tables to inconvenience Sempra, when they have given a San Diegans a lifetime of inconvenience by charging the highest rates in the country and polluting our communities.
It's mind-boggling that we live in a time where you can get arrested for advocating for people's health and the health of our planet - but not for polluting the air we breathe and destroying the planet! Who should really be arrested? Dirt fossil fuel companies that know they are causing harm to our communities but continue "business as usual" anyway - It's all backwards! |
