Campaign Updates

Happy Earth Month from your favorite climate advocates! Our volunteers have been hard at work engaging folks in climate action this month. We were at several Earth Month events - education people on two important campaigns we are working on...

1. Youth v. Oil's SB 1137 resolution

SanDiego350 and our Youth v. Oil campaign are leading the local campaign to keep a vital state law in place.

Exciting News! Youth v. Oil's SB 1137 resolution passed through the La Mesa City Council on Tuesday, April 23rd! Thanks to our amazing team of youth who spoke out at various city council meetings this year, the resolution passed through the Encinitas City Council, the SD City Council Environment Committee, and the San Diego City Council. Next, Youth v. Oil will be taking the resolution to the Vista City Council!

SB 1137 would protect California communities from the harmful effects of oil drilling by requiring a 3,200 foot health and safety setback between homes, schools, hospitals and daycares from oil drilling sites.

2. Power San Diego ballot initiative

Power San Diego is a ballot initiative campaign to Fire SDG&E and replace it with a not-for-profit, publicly owned electric distribution utility in the City of San Diego.

We only have until May 7th to collect signatures - which is why we need your help!

Please help today:

  1. Request a petition by mail. TODAY is the last day to request a mailed petition. If you are a registered voter in the City of San Diego, a petition will be mailed to you to sign; you can also collect up to four signatures from family and friends.
  2. Sign up to help us petition. Even if you don’t live in the City of San Diego, you can still fight SDG&E- any US citizen over 18 can petition. And there are many upcoming petitioning opportunities to choose from.
  3. Donate to the campaign.

Team Spotlight: Raise The Alarm Team
SEMPRA - Stop Fracking our Future!

Don't miss out! Our Raise the Alarm (RTA) Team will be protesting Sempra Energy, San Diego’s local fossil fuel company, on Thursday, May 9th at Sempra's headquarters.

Over the past four years our Raise the Alarm team has been taking the lead on several creative approaches to activism to demand Sempra stop fracking our future! Not only does the team march, and chant but they use the arts to get our message across in a more impactful way that draws media attention.

Last year, the RTA team led a creative protest where volunteers came together to create a huge chalk art mural in front of Sempra Energy Headquarters (read the blog) to tell Sempra and SDG&E to stop cooking our planet with their fracked gas. At protests, volunteers also wear large puppet heads and suits to depict "big oil execs".

Not only does SD350 use the arts to demand action, but we also engage in civil disobedience (pictured above) where our volunteers risk arrest for climate action. Volunteers have put their bodies on the line by blocking Sempra Energy's entrance to the building and their parking. We are turning the tables to inconvenience Sempra, when they have given a San Diegans a lifetime of inconvenience by charging the highest rates in the country and polluting our communities.

It's mind-boggling that we live in a time where you can get arrested for advocating for  people's health and the health of our planet - but not for polluting the air we breathe and destroying the planet! Who should really be arrested? Dirt fossil fuel companies that know they are causing harm to our communities but continue "business as usual" anyway - It's all backwards!

There is power in numbers, and that's where you come in! Our next Sempra Protest is coming up on Tuesday, May 9th - help us make a bold statement to demand affordable energy rates, clean energy, and climate justice. A couple of our volunteers have been making this amazing 10-foot "fracking derrick" (pictured on the left) and have been rehearsing a guerilla theater skit for the rally. You don't want to miss out on seeing the teams new creative approach to take on Sempra Energy!

GET INVOLVED:

  • Register to attend our Sempra Protest on Tuesday, May 9th at 9am at Sempra Energy's Headquarters.
  • Join the Raise The Alarm Team (fill out the volunteer interest form)

What drives your activism? Being an Afrolatina born and raised in Southeast San Diego, I am familiar with the inequities and negligence Communities of Concern are faced with...Being given the opportunity to be a research advocate and realizing the power of my presence and voice at a legislative level was actually making changes in legislation and policies, further motivated me to be an activist for Communities of Concern and Woman of Color. - Tanisha Martin, Member of the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Team

Protest Sempra during Annual Shareholder Meeting

WHEN: May 9, 2024 @ 9:00 am – 10:30 am
WHERE: 488 Eighth Ave. San Diego, California 92101

Join our creative rally to protest Sempra Energy – San Diego’s local fossil fuel company – during its annual shareholder meeting. We’ll protest Sempra for fracking our future and causing climate chaos, and demand a rapid transition to renewable energy.

With guerilla theater, a 10-foot “fracking derrick”, and inspiring speakers and chants, our action will raise awareness about how Sempra is racking up massive shareholder profits at the expense of our climate, our health, and our future.

As customers of Sempra’s subsidiary (and cash cow) SDG&E, the exorbitant rates we pay are funding Sempra’s efforts to expand its fracked methane gas infrastructure and global exports and kill rooftop solar. This must stop.
