Advancing Climate Action and Welcoming New Leaders

Happy May! This month, we give an update on the Power San Diego campaign and the ongoing efforts of our Transportation Team. From collect thousands of signatures to spearheading transformative transportation solutions, we’re committed to creating a greener, brighter future for San Diego. Also, meet our new Youth Program Coordinator, McGarrah Wilson, and read about our youth climate action work in Chula Vista!

EVENT UPDATE:
SEMPRA PROTEST

THANK YOU to all the activists who came together on May 9th to protest Sempra Energy, during its annual shareholder meeting. Sempra is racking up massive shareholder profits at the expense of our climate, our health, and our future.

Our volunteers made this amazing 10-foot “fracking derrick”, and there was also inspiring speakers, chanting, and a fun skit with "Sempra Execs"! Check out the photos and news coverage from the event.

Power San Diego Campaign Update

On Tuesday May 14, the Power San Diego Campaign turned in over 30,000 signatures to the city. THANK YOU to all the volunteers and supporters who dedicated their time and energy into this campaign. The strides we made are significant and we’ll keep fighting for our future.

Although we did not pass the 80,000 signature requirement to qualify, we had enough to trigger a full hearing of the San Diego City Council.

  • What this campaign accomplished
    • Raised awareness of SDG&E’s profit motive causing unaffordable rates and their role in blocking rooftop solar and climate action
    • Built a base of people (petitioners, volunteers and other contacts)
    • Put SDG&E and Sempra on defense
  • What’s next
    • We are committed to keeping the pressure on SDG&E and local and state government to accelerate renewable energy, electrification and climate action and achieve energy democracy and affordability.
    • Check out the Raise the Alarm team, working on the Sempra Fracks our Future Campaign - directly protesting Sempra’s harmful activity.
Youth Story: Climate Action in Chula Vista

Growing up in San Diego, specifically Chula Vista, my dad often took me on hikes, biking, or to the beach, which sparked my environmental awareness. In early 2020, as climate change gained prominence in the media, I realized how its effects perpetuated injustices impacted my community.

Under the CAL EPA grant, I have gotten the opportunity to spread awareness about environmental justice and bring more widespread climate action to my community, Chula Vista, which is home to some of the most at-risk communities in terms of the effects of climate change in San Diego County.

The goal of my internship as the Chula Vista Community Liaison Intern with SanDiego350 is to reverse this trend. I officially took on this role in June 2023, and have learned so much in this short time.

Throughout the internship, I and our Youth Program Coordinator, Lexi, participated in local events like the Chula Vista Lemon Festival and South Bay Summer Fest, providing resources and recruiting youth volunteers.

Meet our new Youth Program Coordinator: McGarrah Wilson

I am so excited and honored to be joining the SanDiego350 team/family as the new Youth Program Coordinator. I’m most looking forward to getting to know the youth climate leaders, working on our Spring 2024 Youth4Climate Summit, and getting involved in the Youth v. Oil Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and became passionate from a young age about the environmental hazards facing my community, from lead in our drinking water, concentrated sewage overflow in our rivers, and air pollution consistently ranking as one of the worst in America. I decided to pursue this passion in college and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Environmental Studies.

As the Youth Program Coordinator, I’m excited to combine my life’s passions of climate action and engaging and activating the younger generation. The time is now to fight for climate justice and I believe youth are the key.

- McGarrah Wilson, Youth Coordinator

Team Spotlight: Transportation Team

Our Transportation Team is working on SO much this year - so we wanted to give you a little insight into their work! The Transportation Team accelerates the transition to an equitable, fully connected, multimodal, zero emission transportation system in the San Diego region.

The Transportation Team is currently working on:

  • Let’s Go! San Diego ballot initiative: Generate voter and elected officials support for the November 2024 ballot measure.
    • Develop presentation materials that individuals can use to present to community organizations.
    • Organize the upcoming June 8 kick-off event for Let’s Go! San Diego.
  • Microtransit: Accelerate adoption of microtransit (Neighborhood Electric Vehicles) initiatives by cities and transit agencies in the region.
    • Work with SANDAG to 1) define the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) data, including demographic data, that need to be collected from multiple on-going microtransit pilot studies; 2) give input to the design of SANDAG’s “Flexible Fleets Dashboard”; and 3) making sure that the data in the Flexible Fleets Dashboard is accessible.
    • Data analysis platform: Recruited graduate student volunteers from UCSD’s Data Science masters program to work with the team to develop a geographic information system (GIS) platform to identify locations in underserved communities for deployment of new microtransit systems.
    • Public outreach: Table and attend events to meet with transit leaders involved with establishing microtransit systems in their communities.
  • SANDAG outreach: Make public comments at SANDAG's public meetings to advocate for the Ten Transit Lifelines and a 25% reduction in VMTs in the 2025 Regional Plan.

Member of the Month:
Chris Roberts

What drives your activism? As a Baby Boomer, I am appalled at the horrible condition that we have left the planet for future generations. There has been strong scientific consensus since the 1980s that GHGs were heating the planet and that this would have dramatic negative effects on the world’s climate, and over the decades we have done essentially nothing about it. As a scientist and a human being with a brain, I take this very personally, and so when I retired, I wanted to volunteer for a climate justice organization like SD350. I’m sorry that I didn’t get involved sooner.
