EVENT SPOTLIGHT: Brighter Future Gala

Our Gala was a HUGE success - thanks to you! It was an evening full of community, joy, and inspiration! Our speakers gave motivational speeches and our guests enjoyed delicious food, and participated in a fun game of climate Lotería! We are able to envision a brighter future for San Diego because of our dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and supportive community members like you.

Our community has really shown up for us - we are grateful for our incredible sponsors, food donors, and silent auction donors (we received 28 silent auction items!)

Check out all the AMAZING photos from the event taken by our talented photographers Mariano Diaz and Hector Rivera.

Announcing the South Bay Clean Energy Education Program

¡Por fin! (finally!) I’m excited to announce SanDiego350’s South Bay Clean Energy Education Program as the youth intern. We will work together to end our overreliance on fossil fuels by educating students about clean energy and how we can contribute to a greener future as high-schoolers. Growing up as a first-generation Mexican American, I understand the need for the South Bay to unite against climate injustice. As a Senior at Bonita Vista High School and an environmental activist, I’m looking forward to providing a youth perspective to this program.

Through a grant we received from San Diego Community Power with additional support from San Diego Foundation and Calpine Energy Solutions, we aim to educate students on clean energy and prepare them for clean energy careers in this two year program and beyond. We aim to reach 1,800 students throughout 3 high schools in the South Bay area through many different approaches such as involvement of environmental lessons in a variety of classes as well as educational booths at fairs. I look forward to leading presentations in my community where a familiar face will best communicate this information.

California Ballot Measure
Deep Dive

As a climate focused organization, we have been working to promote San Diego County Measure G, also known as Let’s Go! San Diego. We are also endorsing California State Proposition 4 -the Climate Bond. But in this post, I want to focus more on our non-climate endorsements.

First of all- why endorse more than the climate related measures? While our main focus as an organization is fighting climate change, those values do not exist in a vacuum. Our work is rooted in fighting injustice. And while we may stay focused on climate change the majority of the time, it is important for us to promote and incorporate fighting other struggles wherever possible.

CA State Prop 6 helps to close a loophole that allows for slavery in California.

CA State Prop 3 would protect marriage equality in the state of California.

CA State Prop 5 would make it much easier for local governments to fund affordable housing measures and public infrastructure.

CA State Prop 32 effectively raises the state minimum wage by an extra dollar from current legislation.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: South Bay Clean Energy Education Program

On Tuesday September 24th, eight teachers from Sweetwater Union High School District met for the South Bay Clean Energy Education Program Kickoff Event (photos). We collaborated to brainstorm ideas for supplemental clean energy curriculum with the help of our high school interns and partners California Global Education Project and Tanisha-Jean Martin. The South Bay Clean Energy Education Program is a two year program educating students in 3 South Bay schools to ultimately prepare them for clean energy careers.

"Having students involved not only in advocacy but also in the implementation of policy is crucial as this will foster the education that youth need to get careers that help solve the climate crisis. " - Daniel Hernandez, South bay Community Liaison Intern
