MLK DAY & Inauguration Day
Climate Legislation / Volunteer Stories

Happy New Year! This month we recognize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, confront the reality of a Trump presidency, discuss the importance of state legislation, hear from our volunteers, and highlight Youth v. Oil's climate action work.

In this moment, we know many people are feeling anxious and afraid. Climate disaster is hitting close to home with the devastating fires in Los Angeles. Trump’s onslaught of executive orders is revealing a presidency that is vengeful and cruel: refusing to share federal disaster funds with LA fire victims, rolling back climate protections, ramping up deportations, and pushing a dark vision of America that threatens our diverse community. Our people, climate, and future are under attack. In California we know the targets on our back.

We invite you to take a breath with us. You are part of a community that is resilient. We urge you to focus on hope, because that is the way to action. As we face more uncertain times and irrational, cruel federal actions, we will need to lean on each other to stay strong and united as we fight back and defend our future.

TEAM SPOTLIGHT: YOUTH V. OIL

After their success with SB1137 in June, Youth v. Oil’s work to take down the Big Oil industry has not stopped. These past few months have been filled with momentum, passion, and determination as its high-school members take on new challenges, from making top polluters pay for their destruction to urging elected officials to take action.

Here’s a closer look into the work of these young activists:

  • Climate Superfund - Support the passage of the CA Climate Superfund, a bill that makes major polluters pay for their environmental damages. Youth v. Oil has been developing an educational toolkit and getting endorsements.
  • Divestment - Encouraging CalSTRS and CalPERS (two largest retirement pension funds in CA) to divest from fossil fuel corporations by building coalition and union support and making an educational toolkit.
  • Legislative Visits - Presenting a letter to SD county assembly members and senators of climate actions Youth v. Oil want to see in their community.
  • Federal Resistance - As the country braced for the impact of the Trump administration, Youth v. Oil wrote a letter to Biden (blog post and video) and California senators, affirming the urgent need to take irreversible climate action before the inauguration. It's members also plan to keep a close eye on the new president’s actions and resist when possible.

Civil Rights: MLK Day / Inauguration Day

MLK Day and the Inauguration all on the same day? Seems like an oxymoron, right?

MLK Day is a day to remember Martin Luther King Jr., a fierce leader and a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement, which fought back against racial discrimination and injustice.

On this same day is the Inauguration of a president who stands for something very different. A president who actively seeks to rollback people’s rights – women’s rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights, etc. For the next 4 years, many of our friends and neighbors will live in fear. To top it all off, we are swearing into office a climate change-denying president, who’s cabinet members have vested interests in fossil fuels, all in the midst of a major climate disaster (LA Fires).

If you feel paralyzed, scared, and anxious for the future – you are not alone. But it’s times like these that bring people together and make movements stronger and more powerful. Dr. King said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” So let’s be loud – Day 1 of Trump in office is day 1 of us combating his rollbacks and fighting for the rights of all people and our planet.

From Idea to Law:
Climate Legislation

Legislation can make a long-lasting impact on climate change? Let’s dive into the process of California legislation and how it plays a role in our work at SD350. This work is done primarily by SD350’s Legislative Team and Youth v. Oil’s Legislative Team. Our priorities for legislation and regulatory policy are:

  1. Keep fossil fuels in the ground.
  2. Support local renewables and promote energy affordability.
  3. Support mass transit.
  4. Promote building decarbonization.

Why is state legislation so important to climate activism? Solutions to global warming and environmental justice arrive from a synergy of education and policy. Lawmaking, is the means by which our ideas for change become reality. How do laws move from ideas to durable actions? (read the article)

Help us turn ideas into action! As a Legislative Team member you can:

  • Make calls / emails to Sacramento
  • Write endorsement requests
  • Help with comms & events
