TEAM HIGHLIGHT: PLANT-FORWARD TEAM

SanDiego350’s newest team, Plant-Forward, got their start in the fall of 2024. The team was created because animal agriculture accounts for a large portion of greenhouse gas emissions, land and water use concerns, and more. The team’s goal is to help the San Diego community reduce emissions and other environmental impacts associated with animal agriculture by educating about and promoting a plant-based diet, as well as advocating for policies that promote the reduction of animal-based products. They currently have 11 members and welcome newcomers!

One of their current projects is a campaign urging the City of San Diego to complete their Climate Action Plan action on reducing purchases of animal products by 20%. Another one of their campaigns is educating the broader community about animal agriculture and its impact on climate change and encouraging plant-based eating. They are doing this through a series of social media posts, blog posts, as well as planning an event for SD350 members in the summer. The team meets every other week, on Mondays from 5-6 pm via Google Meet. About once a month they hold meetings in person to socialize and try different vegan food spots in San Diego. Contact Abby at abby.crowley@sandiego350.org to learn more.

Why do we march?
Unite for Climate march 5/3

From scorching wildfires to devastating floods, climate disasters are happening here and now. The Trump administration has launched an all-out assault on climate action. We march for clean air and water, for the protection of our homes, for a just economy with good-paying green jobs, and for a world that puts people before polluters. We require endurance to face challenges from the Trump Administration and Elon Musk. Breathing fresh clean air is something we treasure, not drilling for more oil and gas.

On Saturday, May 3rd, thousands of San Diegans will march at Waterfront Park. RSVP to attend and bring 10 friends & Sign up to help us organize the march.

Animal Agriculture's Impact on Climate Change

We tend to associate this rise of GHG emissions with the burning of fossil fuels for energy, as well as transportation. But there are other industries and activities that contribute to this. What if I were to tell you that one of these activities is right under your nose – or should I say, on your plate. One of the major drivers of climate change is animal agriculture. If everyone in the U.S. went just one day a week without eating meat and dairy, the environmental impact would be equivalent to taking 7.6 million cars off the road.

You can help by eating more plant-based and joining SanDiego350’s newest team, Plant Forward!

Meet our new Director of Development and Communications: Tyyne

My interest in and concern about climate change turned into activism after giving birth to my daughter in 2020. The fear I had, and continue to have, about what her future would look like, and what my role would be in shaping that future, led me to look for opportunities to become part of the climate movement, and eventually to joining SanDiego350 as a volunteer on the Food and Soil team in 2021. I went on to co-lead the Food Waste Working Group, co-chair the Food and Soil Team itself, and in 2024, join SanDiego350’s Board of Directors, before finally joining as a full time staff member in 2025.
