TEAM SPOTLIGHT: LEGISLATION TEAM

SanDiego350’s state Legislative Team is rounding the bend for the legislative year. The team looked at 40+ bills this spring and, for many, signed or submitted a letter of support or opposition to the policy committees reviewing them. They regularly interfaced with other California climate groups, with Youth v Oil, the Transportation team, and our fledgling Utility Justice table, to evaluate the worthiness of these proposed new laws. California is running a severe deficit, and legislators are heavily focused on addressing wildfires past and future-- expensive undertakings--and on keeping energy costs down for residents which can, but needn’t, be presented as at odds with clean air goals. Several of these bills are short-sighted and we oppose them.

In early June, the team prioritized a slate of 12 climate-related bills that made it through their house of origin (Senate or Assembly ) and are on their way through the other house. Over the summer the team will meet with our legislators from San Diego County to lobby for these bills. SD350’s big campaign for this session is the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act, this legislation, if passed, could help fund climate programs that are in danger.

Join the Legislative Team by filling out this form. If you would like to observe a lobby meeting with one of your legislators, let us know.

Last weekend, over 50 people came to our annual legislative training to develop skills and confidence in communicating with elected officials and build your knowledge about key climate bills. Check out the photos from the event. Learn more about or priority bills by reading this blog article.

Shaping Our Transportation Future: 2025 Regional Plan

Every four years, San Diegans have the opportunity to directly influence the direction of development of transportation infrastructure in our region. The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), is currently drafting the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) for 2025, which maps out our transit future for 2050 and beyond. The 2025 plan, still does not go far enough to improve our transportation system and reduce emissions. We are calling upon SANDAG to modify the plan to take four key steps. (Read the steps in full article)

Take these three actions by July 18th:

  1. Make a written public comment.
  2. Email your representative on the SANDAG Board of Directors.
  3. Attend an in-person public comment event (see in full article)

Chicano History in SD: Tales of Environmental Racism

San Diego finds itself more racially segregated now than it was 30 years ago. The communities disproportionately affected by pollution are overwhelmingly Hispanic. Communities filled with primarily BIPOC families are being forced onto the frontlines of the devastating effects of natural disasters and environmental hazards by the same entities that denied them social, political, and economic power for centuries.

These communities have refused to stand by while their neighborhoods get polluted. As a result of fearless grassroots advocacy, projects such as San Diego’s Urban Forestation and truck electrification efforts to reduce GHG emissions at the port are being implemented to reduce the disparities faced by these communities.

Fighting for a Cleaner CA: Our 2025 Legislative Priorities

As California continues to face the devastating effects of climate change, from wildfires and drought to toxic air and rising sea levels, our state legislature plays a critical role in steering us toward a healthier, more equitable future. Our legislation team has carefully reviewed this year’s landscape, and we’ve identified key bills that either move us closer to our climate justice goals or threaten to set us back.

Read the full article to see where we stand on key climate bills.

We’re calling on our supporters and fellow advocates to speak up for the bills that protect people and the planet and to reject those that serve fossil fuel interests and corporate utilities.

Climate Justice & Labor

I view the fight for workers’ rights and climate justice as the same struggle.

It is this concern for solidarity that has made me want to find ways organized labor and environmentalists can work together. There are so many moments when we can work together. When we must work together or fail in our own separate silos.

We need to show up in solidarity with labor’s struggles. Every time we join a union’s picket line we fight back against Trump’s billionaire agenda. Every time our communities show up to oppose ICE’s sweeps to deport our neighbors we oppose the dismantling of our democracy. We outnumber the billionaires.
