SD350 UPDATES
San Diego City Council Endorses Polluters Pay

On July 16th, Youth v. Oil unanimously passed a resolution in SUPPORT of the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund at the San Diego City Council (press coverage, photos). The bill would make the top fossil fuel companies in California pay for the damages they knowingly caused for decades, with the money entering a superfund which would go towards climate disaster recovery, safe infrastructure, and renewable energy projects.

Transportation Policy Training

The Transportation Training that took place on on July 12th was a success with about 40 people in attendance (photos)! The Transportation team covered topics related to SANDAG, microtransit, land use, and the LOSSAN railway. The event finished with a review on how to give successful public comments and a fun quiz to review. The Transportation team hopes to bring back another training next year.

Movie Night in the Park

On June 26th, the Member Engagement Team (MET) hosted a movie night in the park watching The Lorax, followed by a volunteer panel (photos). Attendees heard from volunteers about how they got involved with SD350, and got an introduction to the “climate Venn diagram” activity to help find their way to get active in the climate movement. The MET team is also planning a kayaking social event on June 27th - mark your calendars, more info coming soon!

Introducing SD350's New Board President: Steve Gelb

Steve is committed to promoting transportation modeshift from driving to walking, cycling, and transit, and by curbing highway expansion. He joined the SD350 Transportation team in 2020 and has represented District 7 on the City of San Diego Mobility Board since 2022.

Advocating for a Better Regional Transit Plan

The Transportation Team continued to push for an end to highway expansions and more public transit in SANDAG's 2025 Regional Transportation Plan, making comments at several public meetings and joining a rally with fellow activists on July 18th outside SANDAG's Transportation Committee meeting (news coverage, photos).

TEAM SPOTLIGHT: RAISE THE ALARM (RTA) TEAM

"I probably don’t need to convince any of you out there that the Trump administration is probably the worst environmental administration this country has ever had. Trump has: pulled us out of the Paris Agreement; crippled the EPA and NOAA; gutted tax credits for green energy; and expanded oil, coal and gas drilling. The list goes on and on. So the Raise the Alarm Team (SD350’s direct action/protest wing) is holding a series of what we’re calling Flash Banner Actions (AKA banner drops) in North County, Central San Diego and South Bay every Wednesday at the height of the morning or afternoon commute. So far our three banners read–”Resist Trump,” “Save Our Planet, “ and “SD350/Climate Action.” The point of these actions is to make clear where SD350 stands and to keep these issues–resistance to Trump and his administration and the importance of environmental/climate action–before the public.

Where we could use volunteers is in creating more banners and a sign for overpass traffic, photographers to document our actions, and folks to attend the actions. And one thing we discovered is that standing around during the hour or so of the FBA can drag a bit. It is not a great venue for speeches or even songs as there can be a lot of wind. Do you have an idea of a fun activity we could do while the banners do their work? If so contact Bill Hagey piscesbill@yahoo.com or Phil Petrie petriep2@gmail.com. And we are always looking for more RTA members!"

-Phil Petrie, Team Lead, RTA

Federal Policy Update: The One Big 'Beautiful' Bill

Unfortunately, this agenda isn’t pretty- it will defund greenhouse gas reduction programs, especially those targeting air quality around schools and small communities. It will also reduce tax credits for renewable projects; if a company doesn’t begin the projects before December 31st, they’ll lose 40% of their credit, and if they don’t start it by 2027, they’ll lose 80%. Not only is the bill an environmental disaster, it’s also a fiscal monstrosity. The bill will cut millions from Medicaid by implementing work requirements, and it will give $5 trillion dollar tax breaks to billionaires, increasing the deficit by $3.6 trillion.

What Paloma Aguirre's Win Means for the SD Board of Supervisors and the Region

Also published on The Jumping-Off Place

Aguirre’s victory gave San Diego a legitimately progressive majority on the County Board of Supervisors. It is a dynamic, racially diverse, all-woman, pro-worker, and environmentally conscious group, all of whom are impressive figures in their own ways. It’s easy to forget how historically new the Democratic dominance of local politics is, and Aguirre’s win solidifies Democratic rule and robs the right of an opportunity to turn back the clock and gain a foothold for Trumpian politics at the county level.

No Fare, No Barriers: Saving SD's Youth Opportunity Pass

The Youth Opportunity Pass began as a pilot project, as a part of a broader effort by SANDAG’s Social Equity Working Group to address disparities in access to transportation. Today, youth take approximately 725,000 rides each month, with over 50,000 riding regularly, with most ridership growth occurring in underserved communities and near schools.
