November 2025 Newsletter

'Tis the season of climate action! This month, we celebrate Prop 50 passing and National City's victory for environmental justice, hear from students about the Youth Polluters Pay walkouts, and learn about the environmental politics of scent pollution.

You can also read the letter from our Executive Director Masada Disenhouse about the announcement that 350.org (the international organization SD350 is affiliated with) is suspending its programs in the United States. As a legally and financially independent organization, SanDiego350's climate justice work is not impacted by this change.

We hope you'll consider making an end-of-year donation to support our work, and join us at Party4thePlanet, our annual volunteer and donor appreciation party, to celebrate our 2025 accomplishments on Saturday, December 6th.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Prop 50 PASSED!

California stood up to Trump’s efforts to rig the midterm elections and resoundingly passed Prop 50! Thanks to you, we were able to contribute to this victory, helping level the playing field for the 2026 elections. Together, we made over 850 calls and knocked on over 650 doors. Wow!

National City Residents Fight Energy Company and Win!

National City Council voted unanimously against allowing a biodiesel transfer depot to be located at the National City railyard. West National City is already in the top 10% most polluted cities in CA. Opposition efforts were led by the Environmental Health Coalition, and SD350 was proud to have helped defeat this project.

Chris Roberts, Transportation Team Lead - What a thrill to have helped our friends at EHC defeat USDG Clean Fuels! I arrived early for the September 17 rally, and was lucky enough to be interviewed by Fox5.
Rita Clement, Transportation, Legislative & Raise the Alarm Teams - I was able to attend all 3 protests and provided public comments.
McGarrah Wilson, Youth Manager - I brought South Bay Youth4Climate members to the rallies and public meetings. Azul, Ashley, and Frida protested, led cheers, and provided public comments. (photos)

SD350’s work continues, despite 350.org’s changes

You may have seen the recent news that 350.org (the international organization that SanDiego350 is affiliated with) is suspending its programs in the United States. While we have successfully partnered with 350.org’s US campaigns many times and are saddened that 350.org will be suspending its U.S. programs, I want to assure you that this change at 350.org will not affect our funding, our campaigns, or ability to achieve our mission.

SanDiego350 is, and has always been, a legally and financially independent organization with its own non-profit status, which means we decide what programs, campaigns, and initiatives we engage in.

In partnership with our many allies and with your support, SanDiego350’s important work will continue. I have so much gratitude for everyone in the SanDiego350 community.

“My favorite part was watching students excitedly pass around the megaphone during our chants so that everyone had a chance to make their voices heard!” – Kaylee Tichenor, senior

Smell Trouble: The Env. Politics of Scent Pollution

Historically, urban living has been associated with unpleasant smells, but what happens when these everyday odors intensify to the point where they become unavoidable? Increasing humidity and climbing temperatures brought about by climate change are intensifying chemical odors, impacting economically disenfranchised communities and exposing vulnerable populations to heightened health risks. The sensory deprivation associated with long-term pollution exposure poses a uniquely cruel form of alienation that diminishes urban livability and risks physical harm. In San Diego, pollution from the Tijuana River penetrates low-income, predominantly Latinx neighborhoods, carrying liquid waste runoff throughout the neighborhoods of San Ysidro and Imperial Beach. Residents are forced to deal with the assault of so-called “sewer gas”, with many residents experiencing health effects from chronic exposure to chemical wastes (Tijuana Toxic Wastes, UCSD).
