EVENT RECAP: Youth4Climate Summit
We had an amazing turnout at the Summit this year! Attendees heard from youth activists and community organizers, participated in workshops, built community, and learned how to take action on climate change.

Over 100 students (18 and under) attend this year and over 130 attendees total, making it our largest Youth4Climate Summit yet. Check out the photos.

Social and Climate Activism – Consider the Boycott

There are many tools for exerting political pressure: strikes, marches, letters to the press, letters or calls to politicians, public comment at meetings of elected officials, town halls, petitions. One of the most powerful, when well organized, is the boycott: to change where you park your money and where or what you buy.

If you bank at any of the big banks (JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Capital One, U.S Bank, etc.) they invest heavily in fossil fuel companies while highlighting their promises and weak efforts to make their practices more sustainable, a practice which we call “greenwashing.” Th!rd Act offers resources for moving your money to institutions that are more aligned with your climate values.

There are some pretty awful things happening out there and Th!rd Act and other organizations are asking conscientious folk to boycott the companies that are enabling ICE raids and DHS lies. Amazon is at the top of their list. I invite you to take a day or two and evaluate for yourself if any of these boycotting efforts call to you. Here are links to the Th!rd Act anti-ICE campaign and an anti-Big Tech campaign.

Meet Our New Team Leads

What drives your activism?
Matt Steinsaltz – Co-Lead, Plant Forward Team- "Too many companies and the policies that support them prioritize profit over people, burdening individuals, especially regarding our food choices. I’m proudly plant-based, and while individual decisions matter, policies should make the healthier option easier to choose."

Sofia Gombatto – Co-Lead, Transportation Team - "My activism is driven by community impact. Being a student at SDSU, I am surrounded by people who rely completely on public transit. Seeing students and other San Diegans not have equitable access to transportation is what pushes me to advocate for progressive, reliable, and affordable transit in San Diego."

Ryan O’Hara – Co-Lead, Legislative Team - "I work in environmental biomedicine, which gives me the opportunity to engage with climate issues at an intellectual level but often lacks a tangible social impact: science is often more focused on the “how does this work?” as opposed to “how can we fix this?”. I take part in activism because it gives me an outlet to use my expertise to actually fix the issues that I study."
