My name is Emma. I am a youth member of SanDiego350 and Youth4Climate, and the former lead of our youth policy team, Youth v. Oil.
Having worked in state policy organizing, I know that one of the easiest (and most crucial) ways that all of us can take meaningful climate action is by putting constant pressure on our elected officials to support pro-climate policies. That is why I am reaching out to ask you to call your representative in support of our two highest-priority bills currently moving through the California legislature.
For too long, corporate interests have prevailed in California. These bills represent a chance to hold corporations accountable while also ensuring California’s budget remains balanced and our climate remains livable.
AB 1790 - Repealing California’s Water’s Edge Tax System: repeal California’s tax “election” system, which allows California-based multinational corporations to evade California taxes by shifting their profits internationally. This would lead to a $3 billion increase in state tax revenue–enough to cover the entire budget shortfall for this year and prevent cuts to crucial programs.
SB 1216 - Fix CARB’s handout to Big Oil: reverse a recent California Air Resources Board (CARB) decision to give away 118 million tons of CO2 worth of polluting “allowances” worth billions of dollars to corporations. This does not change the amount of emissions allowed by CA overall, but it allows corporations to retain more profit and drains state climate funds.
