Climate Advocates Applaud CPUC Administrative Law Judge Kersten’s Recommendation to Reject SDG&E’s Proposed New Gas Pipeline
Will mobilize to build opposition to pipeline in coming weeks

San Diego - The ruling today recommending denial of SDG&E’s Proposed New Gas Pipeline 3602 was issued by California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Kersten. The ruling, which was determined after extensive review of the evidence that need for this pipeline was not demonstrated, was applauded by SanDiego350. The judge also made clear that charging ratepayers for a project that increases gas capacity at a time of decreasing gas demand and in light of the fact that California is moving away from fossil fuels could not be justified.

“This decision was absolutely warranted because of the lack of evidence as to need, the burden to ratepayers, and in consideration of California’s clean energy goals,” said SanDiego350 Pipeline Campaign volunteer Stephanie Corkran, and this decision highlights that the mandate to move away from fossil fuels should be part of the decision making process of public officials and agencies.”

Corkran added, “This is not just a victory for ratepayers, but for all life in our region that is already being catastrophically impacted by climate change driven events. This was a decision for the health of our residents, and for protection of wildlife and open spaces.”

SanDiego350 will be actively organizing opposition to the pipeline and working to ensure the public’s voice opposing this pipeline is registered during the upcoming public comment period. The organization believes that resisting this pipeline, and all new fossil fuel infrastructure, is necessary to meet clean energy goals that protect all life.

This item could come before the Public Utilities Commission as early as June 21, 2018 and it is not assured that the Commission will vote in agreement with the ALJ’s ruling.

The public is invited to learn more by attending a public forum organized by SanDiego350 and Protect Our Communities Foundation that focuses on this issue on May 8, 2018 from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM at Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Guild Room, 2728 Sixth Ave, San Diego, CA 92103.
