FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Diegans to Call on Four Congressional
Representatives to Support a Green New Deal
On February 4th & 7th, will rally and deliver petitions from constituents - part of a national week of action at over 100 Congressional offices
San Diego - On Monday, February 4th and Thursday, February 7th, dozens of San Diegans will rally to call on four local Congressional Representative to declare their support for real climate leadership and a Green New Deal (GND).
At each of the four Congressional offices, San Diegans will deliver petition signatures from constituents and call for immediate action on climate change and economic inequality. These events are part of a national week of action in the spirit of the young people of the Sunrise Movement who occupied House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office calling for a Green New Deal.
The demand is for Representatives Davis (CA-53), Hunter (CA-50), Peters (CA-52) and Vargas (CA-51) to follow Representative Levin’s (CA-49) lead in supporting a GND. The vision of a GND is for a massive program of public investments aimed at transforming both the energy sector and the entire economy, intended to create clean energy jobs and infrastructure, to end fossil fuel extraction and decarbonize the economy, and to ensure a just transition to 100% clean energy with a national job guarantee. The notion of a Green New Deal is supported by 80% of American voters and more than 600 progressive organizations (including 350.org, Center for Biological Diversity, Climate Hawks Vote, Food & Water Watch, Friends of the Earth U.S., and Oil Change USA). Already over 45 members of Congress have pledged their support for such an initiative. Partners in these local petition deliveries include Sunrise Movement San Diego, The Climate Mobilization San Diego, Green Party of San Diego.
Here are details for the petition delivery events at the four Congressional offices. Each event will last 45-60 minutes and will feature colorful banners, handheld signs, and chants:
