Governor Newsom: Phase out oil extraction in California!
Urge Governor Newsom to cease issuing new oil permits and develop a more comprehensive plan for phasing out extraction in California
As residents of San Diego County, we are calling on Governor Newsom to:
- Cease issuing new oil oil drilling immediately
- Create 3,200 ft safety zones between oil extraction sites and our homes, schools, and workplaces.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive plan to end oil extraction in California.
We know we must leave fossil fuels in the ground to stop the climate crisis and preserve a liveable future for youth. In addition, people living and working near oil wells and refineries —primarily low income communities and communities of color — suffer from negative health impacts including childhood leukemia and asthma.
Despite saying he would begin phasing out oil extraction, the Newsom administration issued 2,691 new or reworked oil drilling permits in the first 6 months of 2020.
The fate of Californians’ health and future is in the hands of Governor Newsom!
