Oceanside High-School Intern (Part Time)
This hire is part of a joint program in partnership with Preserve Calavera. The internship is available to students attending Oceanside High School or El Camino High School during the 2025-26 school year.
The Oceanside High-School Intern will activate and empower high school youth climate leaders in Oceanside. They will build relationships with teachers, students and partner organizations, coordinate youth volunteers, and lead organizing, campaigns and events.
SanDiego350 is an inclusive volunteer organization building a movement to prevent the worst impacts of climate change and climate injustice. We support a livable planet and a just society through education and outreach, public policy advocacy, and mobilizing people to take action. We represent over 8,500 local volunteers and supporters in the San Diego area. Youth4Climate, our youth engagement team, and Youth v. Oil, our youth-led campaign, empower youth to take meaningful action for climate. Preserve Calavera is a grassroots organization that works to preserve, protect and enhance the natural resources of coastal North San Diego County.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead youth programs and campaigns: Work with youth volunteers to support planning and execution of Youth v. Oil and other campaign activities, events like our annual Youth Summit and climate strikes, programs like the Eco-Club Coalition, and community building events.
- Build relationships with youth participants and partners: Build relationships with youth volunteers, train and mentor them, and empower them to take on leadership and responsibilities. Seek to engage and build relationships with teachers, parents, and community partners.
- Mobilize students in Oceanside: Do outreach to students at high schools (and middle schools) in Oceanside for events and meetings where they can learn skills to get involved in projects and campaigns.
Essential Skills
- Good social skills, comfort connecting with people from diverse backgrounds
- Comfortable working with a team of adults
- An understanding of systemic racism and environmental injustice and their impacts on underrepresented communities and communities of color
- Good organizational skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Flexibility in responding to unforeseen circumstances to ensure that all participants are safe and engaged
- Compassionate communication style with the ability to create an inclusive environment, integrate a culture of care and community-centered values
Preferred Skills / Experience
- Bilingual (Spanish)
- Knowledge of climate change policy and issues
- Experience in leadership of climate or civic advocacy projects, campaigns, or organizations
- Organizing volunteers around climate or social justice
- Promotion / marketing and communications
- Event planning, especially activists events
- Working with youth

Applicant Must
- Be attending Oceanside High School or El Camino High School for the 2025-26 school year
- Have access to reliable transportation and be willing to use it for job-related tasks
- Own a cell phone, laptop, and reliable home internet to use for job-related tasks
- Be able to lift up to 25 pounds
Employment Details
- Part time, working 8-12 hours per week (school year), with some weeks having no hours and some weeks having longer in-person meetings. Starting immediately upon hire until June or July 2026
- We are accommodating of student’s busy school schedules and hours are flexible
- Benefits: Paid sick leave based on hours worked (1 hr sick leave per 30 hrs worked)
- Compensation: $19 per hour
- Reports to the Oceanside Youth Coordinator
