On Mon, Nov 13, the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) board will consider a resolution to direct staff to develop a plan to electrify its buildings and buses. As the second-largest school district in the County, this would be a major win for the just transition off of fossil fuels towards a safe energy future and climate justice. It is essential that local climate activists show up in force to tell the Board we want this resolution passed and implemented!
The resolution will direct SUHSD staff to develop a policy that includes:
- By January 2024, build new construction and whole-site modernization projects all-electric, without gas infrastructure.
- By August 2024, develop a Green Jobs curriculum for students to learn about and prepare for future career pathways in the electrification and clean energy fields.
- By December 2024, transition to 100% clean energy through San Diego Community Power’s Power100 service level and continue to improve energy efficiency and installation of onsite solar projects to produce local, clean, renewable energy.
- By December 2035, replace all gas infrastructure and appliances including but not limited to HVAC systems, water heaters, stoves and other gas-powered equipment with all-electric alternatives.
- By December 2035, fully electrify Sweetwater’s bus and vehicle fleet.
