How to stay sane during Trump

Me on a bike ride along Silver Strand

A satirical article by Emma Rodriguez, Volunteer Coordinator

1. Drive more often: Get your feelings of frustration out by getting stuck in traffic! You’ll watch your stress melt away as you hear the sweet sound of honking cars. OR: Get out in nature. San Diego is blessed with an incredible range of biodiversity that can be seen from everywhere in our county. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Swimming at La Jolla Shores (when it warms up)
  • Biking along the Silver Strand
  • Walking in Mission Trails
  • Stargazing at Anza Borrego
  • Hiking in Elfin Forest

A Chicken in the House!

2. Laugh at those you love: Making others feel small will help you feel big- everyone knows that.
OR: Laugh with those you love, because spreading joy and building each other up helps everyone.

Here’s a funny story: One of my chickens thinks she is a human or a dog, and is obsessed with following us into the house (and then pooping on our rugs).

3. Get your news from social media: Everyone knows this is where the real truth is! Did you know that everything we know about the pyramids may be wrong?
OR: Take breaks from the news to avoid overwhelming yourself.

  • Give yourself time to decompress.
  • Remember, the goal of those in power is to break us down. No one can take everything in, and you don’t need to.
  • Defiance means continuing the fight.

4. Listen to the sound of fingernails on chalkboards. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
OR: Listen to your favorite music and do some dancing! I’m personally a big fan of KPOP. Oh, you want recommendations for a 2 am solo dance party you’re planning? How fortuitous!

My family learning from the past by recreating Jacques Louis David’s “The Death of Socrates”

5. Ignore the past: History is boring! There are no lessons to learn no matter what your high school teachers might have said.
OR: Get some perspective by exploring stories with parallels to today.
