SanDiego350 is seeking a Director of Development and Communications to join our team. This is a new leadership role in the organization, with a focus on cultivating individual donors and overseeing grants. This role will also support and supervise staff members in Communications and Business Operations and will work very closely alongside our Executive Director to cast vision, budget, and to execute our goals. SanDiego350 has tripled the organizational budget over the last 4 years and has the support from our Board of Directors to continue to grow in order to increase our impact. 

We are looking for someone to lead our efforts to take SD350 and our work to the next level. Someone who is excited to build relationships with funders, expand our funding from major donors and foundation grants, and strengthen our individual donor giving and stewardship. The ideal candidate is experienced in building relationships with foundation funders and individual donors, has strong interpersonal skills, strong storytelling and writing skills.    

SanDiego350 is an inclusive volunteer organization building a movement to prevent the worst impacts of climate change and climate injustice. We support a livable planet and a just society through education and outreach, public policy advocacy, and mobilizing people to take action. We represent approximately 8,000 local volunteers and supporters in the San Diego area. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and Implement Fundraising Plan and Strategy: This will include grants, contracts, major gifts, corporate giving, individual donors, including monthly donors, special events and donor communications / appreciation. Focus on cultivating new major donors and managing relationships, grant prospecting and writing, foundation relationships, and grant and impact reporting. Develop fundraising strategies and goals that align with the organization’s mission and values. Prepare updates for donors. Create and lead a board fundraising team. Shared responsibility for developing an annual budget. Monitor and analyze fundraising data. It is the responsibility of this role to ensure that the organization’s fundraising goals are met or exceeded. 
  • Support and Oversee Communications and Marketing Plan and Strategy: Provide input and support to the Communications and Marketing Coordinator in developing and executing the Communications and Marketing plan which includes: web presence, email and social media communications, earned media, printed materials, marketing the organization and public education on campaigns. Track analytics and use data to optimize the plan. 
  • Manage Staff: Manage the Fundraising and Marketing Coordinator and the Operations and HR Coordinator. Work with staff to set goals and expectations, hold regular 1-1 checks ins, provide training and guidance, perform quarterly and annual reviews, and support professional and personal development.
  • Community Relationships: Lead development and maintenance of public relations, relationships with funders and foundations, and media strategy and relationships. Attend community events and network. 
  • Support Organizational Strategy and Operations: Support the ED and Board to develop and execute overarching strategies and organizational growth. Ensure that all records, databases, and documents are properly maintained and in compliance with federal, state and local regulations, grant reporting requirements, as well as organizational policy (with Operations and HR Coordinator)

Essential Skills

  • Strong skills in networking and building and maintaining relationships

  • Strong leadership skills to lead and mentor staff and foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to plan, coordinate, create timelines, and complete programs and projects independently
  • Deep familiarity with best practices for nonprofit communication through email, website, earned media and social media. 
  • Demonstrated passion and commitment to the climate crisis and environmental justice and upholding our justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a successful nonprofit fundraising role, with a strong understanding of nonprofit fundraising strategies, systems, and processes and a successful track record with major and individual donors. 
  • Experience with researching, coordinating, and writing grant proposals, tracking grant impact data, and reporting. 
  • Demonstrated success in securing and managing at minimum five-figure grants. 
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a supervisory/hiring position and coordinating project-based teams

Preferred

  • 2+ years of experience in nonprofit communications
  • Knowledge of San Diego climate change policy and issues 
  • Producing data-driven reports and presentations
  • Lived experience in a community of concern and/or experience serving in communities of concern. 

Employment Details

  • Full time, hybrid role based in San Diego County.
  • Be able to work remotely as well as out of our Hillcrest office, and travel around San Diego County. There is currently an in-person office day on Mondays for all staff. 
  • Flexible to work evenings and weekends as needed. 
  • Benefits: Reimbursement for health care costs for employee, sick leave, paid time off, and home internet/cell phone. 
  • Initial hiring range $75,000-$85,000, with built in salary increases over time as responsibilities grow. 
  • Reports to the Executive Director.
