City Heights/Southeast San Diego High School Intern (Part Time)

The City Heights/Southeast San Diego High School Intern will develop deeper subject area knowledge and professional and leadership skills through the Youth4Climate Program. They will complete a community civic engagement project in their community furthering our mission of empowering youth climate leaders to prevent the worst impacts of climate change and climate injustice. The intern will connect with students, build enthusiasm, lead student activities outside the classroom, and encourage students to take action, as well as community presentations and educational booths at events. They will also help lead the media team, assisting with making social media posts, videos, blogs, and maintaining the Instagram account.
SanDiego350 is an inclusive volunteer organization building a movement to prevent the worst impacts of climate change and climate injustice. We strive to create a future that supports a livable planet and just society through education and outreach, public policy advocacy, and mobilizing people to take action. Youth4Climate, our youth engagement team, and Youth v. Oil, our youth-led campaign, empower youth to take meaningful action for climate.
Primary Responsibilities
- Attend meetings: participate in in-person and virtual meetings with other students and check-ins with the Youth Program Coordinator
- Community project: complete a community civic engagement project in the community furthering our goals of empowering youth climate leaders to prevent the worst impacts of climate change and climate injustice
- Outreach events: attend outreach events like tabling and speak with members of the community about our work
- Recruit, engage, and motivate students: Outreach to students in the community, train and mentor them, get them involved in our youth program and the community project, and empower them to take on leadership and responsibilities.
- Media creation: help run media team meetings, create social media posts and videos, teach other students social media skills
Essential Skills
- Good social skills, comfort connecting with people from diverse backgrounds
- Comfortable working with a team of adults
- An understanding of systemic racism and environmental injustice and their impacts on underrepresented communities and communities of color
- Good organizational skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Flexibility in responding to unforeseen circumstances to ensure that all participants are safe and engaged
- Compassionate communication style with the ability to create an inclusive environment, integrate a culture of care and community-centered values
- Comfortable with social media, content creation or producing videos and posts for social media campaigns
Preferred Experience (in a paid or volunteer role)
- Organizing volunteers around climate or social justice
- Promotion / marketing and communications
- Event planning, especially activists events
- Working with youth
- Familiarity with climate change and environmental justice issues

Applicant Must
- Be based in the City Heights or Southeast San Diego and attend a high school in the community
- Have access to reliable transportation and be willing to use it for job-related tasks
- Own a cell phone, laptop, and reliable home internet to use for job-related tasks
- Be able to lift up to 25 pounds
Employment Details
- Part time, working 6-8 hours per week (September 2026-Summer 2027, with the opportunity to extend to December 2027), with some weeks having no hours and some weeks having longer in-person meetings
- Benefits: Paid sick leave based on hours worked (1 hr sick leave per 30 hrs worked)
- Compensation: $20 per hour
- Reports to the Youth Program Coordinator
