On April 25, the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) board will consider a resolution to go fossil-fuel free and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035! As the second-largest school district in the state of California, the 5th-largest economy in the world, this could be a major win for the just transition off of fossil fuels towards a safe energy future and climate justice. Climate activists must show up to tell the Board we want this resolution passed and implemented!
The resolution will direct SDUSD staff to develop a policy that includes:
- “Phase out the use of fossil fuels by electrifying all district infrastructure, including buildings, bus fleets, maintenance vehicles, as practicable, prioritizing investments at schools in Communities of Concern. The district will work with community partners to identify funding sources for these sustainable investments.
- All future new buildings will be powered by 100 percent electric energy.
- Existing mechanical heating systems, natural gas-powered water heaters and gas stoves and other natural gas-powered equipment will be replaced at the end of their useful life with all electric systems.
- Starting in 2024, whole campus modernization projects will include new electric vehicle charging systems.
- Achieve net-zero energy districtwide by 2035; Improve energy efficiency and design and construct solar / photovoltaic energy systems to produce clean renewable energy.
- Transition to 100 percent clean energy by 2025 through San Diego Community Power’s Power100 program.
- Develop a Green Jobs curriculum for students to learn about and prepare for future career pathways in the electrification and clean energy fields."
