Youth v. Oil is advocating for the San Diego City Council to pass a resolution supporting the CA Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act (SB 684 and AB 1243), to hold the largest fossil fuel polluters financially accountable for the climate damages they knowingly caused and profited off of.

This resolution is on the docket at the San Diego City Council Rules Committee meeting on Thursday, June 12. Please help ensure this important resolution passes!

Please show your support for our youth leaders:

  1. Attend the meeting – in-person if possible (you can also tune in to watch online).  The meeting starts at 10 am, and our item is item 2, so we expect it to come up close to the start of the meeting. MEET US in the breezeway downstairs at 9:30AM and we can hand out signs and t-shirts and go up together.
  2. Submit written public comment ahead of the meeting. Here is a toolkit to help you send in a public comment.

Why does this matter?

This bill would require fossil fuel companies responsible for more than 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from 1990-2024 be held financially accountable for the damages they caused. The Superfund will be dedicated to funding projects responding to, or attempting to mitigate damage caused by climate change, especially in frontline communities. Both Vermont and New York have passed similar bills.

How to get there:

Take the Blue, Orange or Silver Trolley to Civic Center Station, or buses 2, 3, 7, 110, 901, 923, 929 or  992. If driving, you can park in the Evan V. Jones municipal parking garage (entrance is on 1st Ave near A Street).

We also have an organization sign-on letter to support the bill – if your organization wants to sign on so we can add your name to our presentation, you can fill out our form here

If you have any comments, questions, or concerns do not hesitate to contact emma@youth4climate350.org.
