SanDiego350 is seeking a Volunteer Coordinator to join our team. The Volunteer Coordinator will recruit, support, and grow the leadership of our incredible team of volunteers to advance just and equitable solutions to the climate crisis. They will oversee all efforts related to volunteer coordination and appreciation, and collaborate with teams across the organization.
SanDiego350 is an inclusive volunteer organization building a movement to prevent the worst impacts of climate change and climate injustice. We support a livable planet and a just society through education and outreach, public policy advocacy, and mobilizing people to take action. We represent approximately 8,000 local volunteers and supporters in the San Diego area.
Primary Responsibilities
- Recruit and coordinate volunteers: Recruit volunteers for volunteer teams, campaigns, outreach, volunteer roles, and other activities; onboard and track volunteers and volunteer activities; develop a volunteer retention strategy and support teams to implement it; spearhead email communications among volunteers; and, lead volunteer appreciation efforts. Support efforts to create a more diverse and inclusive organization that centers justice, equity, and frontline communities.
- Develop volunteer teams and leadership: Train and coach volunteers and volunteer leaders. Support the development of volunteer leaders and help strengthen existing volunteer teams and establish new volunteer teams. Develop and run training and coaching programs. Develop, fill and support volunteer leadership roles and activities (outside of the Teams).
- Assist with organizational operations and event planning: Develop, document and support processes and procedures in regard to volunteer efforts; evaluate volunteer engagement program effectiveness; help to plan and staff fundraising events, such as the annual gala; support promotion and storytelling efforts; lead end of the year Volunteer Appreciation party. Develop creative processes and structures to support the continued growth and evolution of the organization.

- A “people person” who is comfortable talking to and building genuine relationships with volunteers.
- Strong digital skills (especially Google docs, social media, and database).
- Passionate & knowledgeable about climate justice issues.
- Good organizational skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- An understanding of systemic racism and environmental injustice and their impacts on underrepresented communities and communities of color.
- Experience and interest in working directly with people from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to address emerging conflicts, manage the nuances of evolving relationships, and have the awareness and judgment to ask for help when it’s needed.
Required Experience
- Experience recruiting, engaging, training, coaching, and coordinating volunteers and volunteer leaders from diverse backgrounds, experience levels, and learning/communication styles, and supporting their growth, political education, and leadership development.
Preferred Experience
- Bilingual (Spanish)
- Knowledge of climate change policy and issues, especially relevant to San Diego County
- Experience developing and managing organizational systems
- Producing data-driven reports and presentations
- Coalition participation and experience collaborating with organizational partners
- Experience with climate or civic advocacy projects, campaigns, or organizations
- Experience creating social media graphics, emails, and other communications work products
- Lived experience in a community of concern and/or experience serving and building power in communities of concern

Applicant Must
- Be based in the San Diego area and have the ability to work remotely as well as out of our Hillcrest office, and travel around San Diego County. There is currently an in-person office day on Mondays for all staff.
- Be able to work flexible hours with evenings and weekends regularly required
- Have access to reliable transportation and be willing to use it for job-related tasks. Mileage reimbursement is provided.
- Own a cell phone and reliable home internet to use for job-related tasks
Employment Details
- Full time, working primarily remotely and occasionally in our office.
- Benefits: Reimbursement for health care costs for employee, sick leave, paid time off, and home internet/cell phone supplement.
- Hiring range: $26.40 – $28.85 per hour, depending on prior experience.
- Reports to the Executive Director.
