¡Por fin! (finally!) I’m excited to announce SanDiego350’s South Bay Clean Energy Education Program as the youth intern. We will work together to end our overreliance on fossil fuels by educating students about clean energy and how we can contribute to a greener future as high-schoolers. Growing up as a first-generation Mexican American, I understand the need for the South Bay to unite against climate injustice. As a Senior at Bonita Vista High School and an environmental activist, I’m looking forward to providing a youth perspective to this program.
Through a grant we received from San Diego Community Power with additional support from San Diego Foundation and Calpine Energy Solutions, we aim to educate students on clean energy and prepare them for clean energy careers in this two year program and beyond. We aim to reach 1,800 students throughout 3 high schools in the South Bay area through many different approaches such as involvement of environmental lessons in a variety of classes as well as educational booths at fairs. I look forward to leading presentations in my community where a familiar face will best communicate this information. I hope to connect with students and build enthusiasm for a sustainable future by leading student activities outside the classroom and encouraging students to bring clean energy conversations to friends and family.
We also want to create a set of resources that can be sent out far beyond just the South Bay to help various communities combat environmental injustice. I’m especially excited to be able to interact with my community by speaking about clean energy at various events such as the Lemon Festival and South Bay Earth Day. We hope to reach 2,000 community members through increasing accessibility to information on clean energy in both English and Spanish.
Having students involved not only in advocacy but also in the implementation of policy is crucial as this will foster the education that youth need to get careers that help solve the climate crisis. Working with 9 teachers who teach a variety of subjects, I will help review the curriculum and provide feedback and suggestions on accessibility and interest to youth by gathering input from students about what they would want their curriculum to look like.
The South Bay Clean Energy Education Program is the beginning of a status quo, where both adults and youth will be able to work together for a better future. Not only will we be educating students to help shape a greener world, but we will also build more environmentally aware communities. This program helps my climate anxiety and reminds me that when it comes to working together for a greener, cleaner future I can say “¡Si se puede!” (Yes we can).

¡Por fin! Me complace anunciar el Programa de Educación sobre Energía Limpia de South Bay de SanDiego350 como pasante juvenil. Trabajaremos juntos para poner fin a nuestra dependencia excesiva de los combustibles fósiles educando a los estudiantes sobre la energía limpia y cómo podemos contribuir a un futuro más verde como estudiantes de preparatoria. Al crecer como mexicoamericano de primera generación, entiendo la necesidad de que South Bay se una contra la injusticia climática. Como estudiante de último año en Bonita Vista High School y activista ambiental, espero poder brindar una perspectiva joven a este programa.
A través de una concesión que recibimos de San Diego Community Power y FundacÍon San Diego, nuestro objetivo es educar a los estudiantes sobre energía limpia y prepararlos para carreras en energía limpia en este programa de dos años y más allá. Nuestro objetivo es llegar a 1,800 estudiantes en 3 escuelas secundarias en el área de South Bay a través de muchos enfoques diferentes, como la participación de lecciones ambientales en una variedad de clases, así como puestos educativos en ferias. Espero liderar presentaciones en mi comunidad donde una cara familiar comunicará mejor esta información. Espero conectarme con los estudiantes y generar entusiasmo por un futuro sostenible dirigiendo actividades estudiantiles fuera del aula y alentándolos a llevar conversaciones sobre energía limpia a familiares y amigos.
También queremos crear un conjunto de recursos que puedan enviarse mucho más allá de South Bay para ayudar a varias comunidades a combatir la injusticia ambiental. Estoy especialmente emocionado de poder interactuar con mi comunidad hablando sobre energía limpia en varios eventos como el Festival del Limón y el Día de la Tierra de South Bay. Esperamos llegar a 2,000 miembros de la comunidad a través del aumento del acceso a información sobre energía limpia tanto en inglés como en español.
Es fundamental que los estudiantes participen no solo en la promoción si no también en la implementación de políticas, ya que esto fomentará la educación que los jóvenes necesitan para obtener carreras que ayuden a resolver la crisis climática. Trabajando con 9 maestros que enseñan una variedad de materias, ayudaré a revisar el plan de estudios y brindaré comentarios y sugerencias sobre accesibilidad e interés para los jóvenes al recopilar comentarios de los estudiantes sobre cómo les gustaría que fuera su plan de estudios.
El Programa de Educación sobre Energía Limpia de South Bay es el comienzo de un estatus de igualdad , donde tanto adultos como jóvenes podrán trabajar juntos para un futuro mejor. No sólo educaremos a los estudiantes para ayudar a crear un mundo más verde, sino que también construiremos comunidades más conscientes del medio ambiente. Trabajar en este programa me ayuda en mi ansiedad climática y me recuerda que cuando se trata de trabajar juntos por un futuro más verde y limpio puedo decir “¡Si se puede!”.
