Community Outreach Program Assistant Job Description

SanDiego350 is seeking a Community Outreach Program Assistant to join our team. The Program Assistant will support SD350 community outreach, education and marketing efforts for the Equitable Building Decarbonization program and occasionally other programs by planning and executing outreach to key communities. The Program Assistant performs day-to-day implementation tasks independently, with guidance and review from staff.

The Equitable Building Decarbonization (EBD) Statewide Direct Install Program provides and installs energy-efficient electric appliances, energy efficiency measures, and related upgrades at no cost to income-qualifying households in under-resourced communities. The program will help with lowering bills and creating healthier homes. SanDiego350 is working with San Diego Community Power to promote the program, with the goal of educating eligible applicants in West Chula Vista and National City about the program and encouraging them to apply.

SanDiego350 is an inclusive volunteer organization building a movement to prevent the worst impacts of climate change and climate injustice. We support a livable planet and a just society through education and outreach, public policy advocacy, and mobilizing people to take action. We represent approximately 8,000 local supporters in San Diego County.

Position Details

  • Part-time: 10-19 hours per week (averaging 15 hours)
  • Start Date: End of May
  • Commitment: Minimum of 1 year
  • Schedule: Mostly evenings and weekends; well-suited for students or others with availability during these time
  • Reports to: Program Coordinator

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan and run community outreach efforts, targeting underserved communities, primarily in service areas in west Chula Vista and National City, including door knocking, tabling, presentations, and phone banking. 
  • Prepare and use outreach materials, including scripts and talking points, using program resources provided by SD350 and program partners. 
  • Track and report on outreach results, reporting on a bi-weekly basis, including numbers of events, people spoken to, potential program applicants, and more as required.
  • Participate in program oversight and strategy meetings with San Diego Community Power and internally with SanDiego350 staff and volunteers.
  • Coordinate and support volunteers during outreach efforts, including providing talking points, guidelines, and logistical support.

Required Qualifications (in a paid or volunteer role)

  • Public speaking 
  • Public outreach (e.g., tabling, flyering, canvassing, phone banking)
  • Bilingual Spanish proficiency 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Passion for clean energy, climate solutions, public health or community-based work 
  • Knowledge of building electrification, energy affordability, and related issues, especially relevant to San Diego County
  • Understanding of systemic racism and environmental injustice and their impacts on underrepresented communities and communities of color

Key Skills and Strengths

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish 
  • Comfort and confidence spending significant time talking to and engaging directly with the public,  including cold outreach, tabling, and phone banking, and connecting with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Working knowledge of common professional tools (e.g., email, spreadsheets, shared documents)
  • Highly self-motivated and comfortable working independently

Applicant Must

  • Be based in the San Diego area (strong preference for candidates who reside in and are familiar with west Chula Vista and National City) 
  • Have access to a cell phone, laptop, and reliable internet for work-related tasks
  • Have access to reliable transportation
  • Be able to work on your feet, indoors and outdoors, for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Be able to lift up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation

Compensation and Benefits

  • Benefits: Paid sick leave based on hours worked (1 hr sick leave per 30 hrs worked)
  • Pay: $24-$26 per hour, depending on experience
