Youth v. Oil is advocating for the San Diego City Council to pass a resolution supporting the Campaign for a Safe and Health California and keeping SB1137, the state law passed in 2022 to prohibit new or modified oil and gas wells within 3,200 feet of homes, schools, daycare centers, parks, healthcare facilities, and businesses.

This resolution, which passed the Environment Committee in February, is on the docket at the full San Diego City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 9. Please help ensure this important resolution passes. The resolution was passed by the Encinitas Council on Feb 28.

Please show your support for youth leaders:

  1. Attend the meeting – in-person if possible (you can also tune in to watch online).  The meeting starts at 10 am, and this item is on the consent agenda, so we expect it to come up by 11 am.
  2. Submit written public comment ahead of the meeting

Why does this matter?

When the law passed in 2022, Big Oil spent tens of millions of dollars to put a statewide referendum on the November ballot to try to repeal the law and at minimum delaying it by 2 years. We want to make sure that San Diegans vote to keep the law in place, and want to get our cities on record in support.

We will have a toolkit linked here soon to help you send in a public comment. Please make sure to register so you’ll be notified of any updates.

How to get there

Take the Blue, Orange or Silver Trolley to Civic Center Station, or buses 2, 3, 7, 110, 901, 923, 929 or  992. If driving, you can park in the Evan V. Jones municipal parking garage (entrance is on 1st Ave near A Street).

We also have an organizational sign-on letter – if your organization wants to sign on contact abby@youth4climate350.org
