Brighter Future Gala

 

Join us to celebrate SanDiego350’s climate action work at our annual Gala fundraiser. The event will feature inspiring speakers, live music, and delicious food! Whether you’ve volunteered for years, or you’re interested in learning more about SD350’s work, join us to celebrate our hard won climate victories and movement building! Your ticket purchase will support programming and fight climate change in San Diego County.

We have discounted rates for new monthly donors and existing monthly donors. New monthly donors at $25 or more get two free VIP tickets. *VIP TICKETS – The intimate VIP event takes place 3:15 – 4 pm. There will be a Q&A with politicians, networking with climate leaders, and refreshments. VIP attendees will receive a special token of our appreciation.

 

CONFIRMED SPEAKERS

Sean Elo-Rivera – San Diego City Council President

Council President Sean Elo-Rivera proudly represents San Diego’s 9th City Council District and is committed to the realization of his vision of “Opportunity for All.” He was elected as Councilmember in November 2020 and then elected City Council President in December of 2021 and 2022. Before joining the Council, Sean served as an elected member of the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees and as the Executive Director of Youth Will where he worked to create a future where every young person is happy, healthy, and prepared to reach their potential. 

Kyra R. Greene, PhD – Center on Policy Initiatives

Dr. Kyra R. Greene is Executive Director of the Center on Policy Initiatives. Dr. Greene earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Stanford University, and also holds a B.A. in Social Sciences from Bard College at Simon’s Rock. Her past research has focused on social movement messaging/framing, legislative processes, and public policies affecting the lives of people of color and people with disabilities. Dr. Greene serves on numerous boards, and chairs the Engage San Diego Action Fund and PowerSwitch Action.

Tanisha-Jean Martin – SD Urban Sustainability Coalition

Tanisha-Jean Martin is the Climate Community Director and Environmental Justice Consultant at San Diego Urban Sustainability Coalition (SDUSC) where she leads the Climate Ambassador Program. Tanisha-Jean is also a member of SanDiego350’s JEDI Team, Chair of the San Diego Building Electrification Coalition Equity Working Group, and Steering Committee Member of the San Diego Green New Deal Alliance. She graduated from SDSU and triple majored in Geography, Sociology and Political Science, and earned her Master’s degree at University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences.

Emma Weibel – Youth v. Oil Campaign Intern

Emma is SanDiego350’s Youth v. Oil intern, leading the Youth v. Oil campaign. She is president of her high school eco club: La Jolla Environmental Action (LJEA). Emma mobilizes youth and students to fight for an end to fossil fuels in our community and across California. Emma’s passion is social justice and she has found her life’s purpose in fighting for it. Her time at Youth4Climate so far has helped her grow into her place in this movement: a communicator and the girl behind the megaphone. 

PERFORMERS

Julie Corrales – Poet

Julie Corrales is a first-generation Chicana, an autodidactic chola, political activist, teen-mother, hoochie, feminist, survivor, actively engaged in her own decolonization. Zapoteca by blood and a citizen of the United States by her parents’ sweat and tears, she draws on her experiences to advocate for and write about Chicanx issues.

As a youth, Julie wrote many melodramatic rhyming love poems, some of which are still in circulation among incarcerated Californians. Since then, her essays have been published in the San Diego Union Tribune and La Prensa San Diego, and her poetry has been published in Acentos Review, Anacua Literary Arts Journal, and Azahares Literary Magazine.

Julie works as a policy advocate with Environmental Health Coalition to help improve health disparities in communities impacted by environmental racism; and is a founding board member of Tierras Indigenas Community Land Trust, working to house low-income families. You can find her at your local protest, or performing spoken word somewhere in Barrio Logan.

 

Day of Information

Attire: Elevated casual. The venue is mainly outdoors and there is no rain plan, so we encourage you to check the weather and dress accordingly to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable evening. Parking: The Burbank Elementary school lot (a 5 min walk) is available to 30 cars and we’re working on other spaces. There are around 15 spots available behind the brewery that we are holding for gala guests with mobility needs. There is ample street parking available in the surrounding neighborhood. We encourage carpooling and public transportation.
